Traveling is one of life's greatest joys, but returning home with bed bugs is a nightmare. These resilient pests are excellent hitchhikers and can easily latch onto your luggage, clothing, and personal items while you are staying in hotels or utilizing public transit.
To protect your home from an infestation, follow this professional guide before, during, and after your trip.
1. Inspect Your Hotel Room Immediately
Before unpacking or even sitting on the bed, perform a quick inspection. Pull back the bedsheets and check the seams of the mattress and the corners of the box spring. Look for small rust-colored stains, tiny eggs, or live bugs. Don't forget to check the headboard and nearby upholstered furniture.
2. Elevate Your Luggage
Never put your suitcase on the floor or on the bed. Always use the provided luggage rack, but inspect the rack first. If a luggage rack isn't available, keeping your bags in the bathroom (especially in the bathtub) is the safest option, as bed bugs struggle to climb smooth surfaces.
3. Unpack Carefully Upon Return
When you arrive home, do not bring your luggage directly into your bedroom. Instead, unpack in your garage, outside, or in a well-lit bathroom. Inspect the seams and pockets of your suitcase with a flashlight.
4. Wash Everything on High Heat
Heat is a bed bug's worst enemy. Take all the clothing from your trip—even the unworn items—and wash them immediately in hot water. After washing, dry them on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes. This will kill bed bugs at all stages of development, from eggs to adults.
5. Store Your Luggage Safely
Once empty, vacuum the inside and outside of your suitcase thoroughly. For extra protection, store your luggage in a sealed plastic bag or a specialized bed bug-proof encasement until your next trip.
What if They Still Followed You Home?
Bed bugs reproduce rapidly, and DIY treatments rarely eliminate the entire problem. If you wake up with itchy bites or spot the telltale signs of bed bugs in your home, it requires immediate professional intervention.
